One thing many are hoping for this year is to see the economy pick up. A new port scheduled to open on Jan. 19 in Busan is to help make that happen with state-of-the-art logistics, information and finance facilities.
The Busan Port Authority said the New Port will accommodate in all 30 berths with a handling capacity of 8 million containers a year. Construction is divided into two phases, with the first one scheduled to be completed this month. The port authority plans to open three berths following the first phase.

About 900,000 containers are expected to be handled this year, rising to the full 8 million when the project is complete in 2011. Busan is the fifth largest port city in the world and hopes to move up the ranks with the New Port. The port authority has pledged to provide fast high-quality services by constantly checking traffic on the port's back road and railways as well as port security. It is preparing the New Port to compete with Shanghai's recently opened massive Yangshan Port.

While many experts say it will take several years before the New Port operates normally, the Busan Port Authority expects it eventually to become the hub of logistics in the Northeast Asian region.
