Salmon have returned to Ilgwang Stream in GijangCounty this year. The first salmon arrived back in the stream on November 3. This is two weeks later than last year.
GijangCounty and the Busan Marine Fisheries Resources Research Institute decided to breed baby salmons from five returning salmons. Last year, GijangCounty and the Research Institute released 10,000 baby salmon into the Ilgwang Stream which were produced from 20 of 72 salmon that returned to the Ilgwang Stream, in cooperation with Gyeongsangnam-do Fisheries Resouces Research Institute. In addition, last March, 50,000 salmon offered by the National Fisheries Reserach & Development Institute were released into the Ilgwang Stream and the Jwagwang Stream in GijangCounty.
GijangCounty and the Research Institute have released 340,000 baby salmon to restore coastal fish habitat and to create fishery resources since 2004. The released baby salmon live along the coastlines of the Pacific Ocean for 3 to 5 years and then swim back to the same stream where they were born between October and December during the spawning season.
GijangCounty and the Research Institute will release young salmon every year in the hope that they will return to the stream where they were born, and they will ensure that the stream continues to get cleaner and cleaner year by year.
