Haeundae’s Dalmaji Hill, where most of the art galleries in Busan are concentrated, is emerging as a major cultural attraction.

Haeundae-gu District has already held the ‘Moontan Road Free Market’ twice this month, on November 6 and November 20, and will hold the final market of the month on November 27 from 11 a,m. until 6 p.m, exhibiting and selling artworks of local artists at Haeweoljeong Pavilion, on Dalmaji-gil.

A free market has already been held four times during the Moontan Road Walking event and the Dalmaji Moon-viewing Hill Philosophy Festival, from August through October this year, and was well received by local citizens. Consequently, the district decided to run the free market regularly from November.

A ‘Free Market’ is one that takes place on an open space such as in the street or the park. Local artists exhibit and sell their artworks and citizens come to browse and buy them. It is an art market and a festival rolled into one, where artists and citizens can naturally communicate with each other.

The Free Market in Hongik University is a well-known free market in Korea. In Busan, three Art Market zones have been actively held, around the 40 Steps area in Jungang-dong, by Pusan National University, and in the Pukyong University / Kyungsung University area of the city.

A district official said, “We plan to officially run the Free Market every Saturday from next March until November and expect Dalmaji-gil to become a unique cultural attraction in Busan.”
