Busan
City took the first step toward becoming an Active Healthy City in concert with
the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health Promotion Foundation.
The
Active Healthy City project to reduce Busan's escalating obesity rate and
increase citizens’ physical activity is being tried out at Busan Metro
Station.
The
stairs at the station are decorated with nature images to simulate outdoor
hiking while climbing the stairs. It is hoped that this will encourage people
to use the stairs instead of the lifts or escalators as a lifestyle
exercise.
Images
of jumping, long jumping and balancing events are posted on the station poles,
platform and ticket machine floor respectively, offering people a chance to
exercise anywhere in the station.
Eleven
rules for a healthy life are also posted on the wall of the platform, and a
video encouraging an active, healthy lifestyle is being screened on the
electronic boards in the train and on the platforms of all Busan Metro lines.
In
a survey of 201 Busan citizens on the city’s Active Healthy City project, 82.5%
agreed with the subject of “Lifestyle Exercise” and 77.6% felt motivated to use
the stairs more often when they saw the nature images on the Busan Station
stairs.
Busan City plans to extend the Active Healthy City project in the near future.
