Deal expected to bolster city’s ties with India’s economic powerhouse
Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik and Mumbai Mayor Shubha Raul reach a deal for cooperation.
Busan has signed a sisterhood city agreement with Mumbai, the largest business and financial city in India.
Hur Nam-sik, the mayor of Busan, and Mumbai Mayor Shubha Raul inked an agreement on Nov. 19 at City Hall to become sisterhood cities. The two signed a joint declaration promising cooperation and development in economics, culture, education and private citizen exchange. Mumbai is India’s economic hub, playing a similar role in the country in terms of its shipping and entertainment industries as Busan does in Korea.
With the new agreement, Busan has now created a bridge that will help it enter the burgeoning India market, which recently recorded an 8 percent spike in economic growth and ranks as the fourth in the world in gross domestic product. The movie industry also is very developed in Mumbai. The city produces over 1,000 movies a year, creating expectations that it will become a significant partner in this area with Busan. Mumbai also is home to a port that handles 57 percent of the country’s container traffic.
