Upgraded observatory and park enhance its allure

Mt. Hwangryeong Bongsudae - which means “beacon mound” - is a great area where visitors can soak up complete views of Busan’s downtown. Several projects that Busan City started in October 2008 to enhance the observation platform and the nearby neighborhood have been finished, making Bongsudae a cleaner, more attractive and more convenient rest area for visitors. At the top of the mountain, where Bongsudae is located, a 6,604-square-meter site is being developed and upgraded to include a plaza and a beautiful park filled with pine trees and flower beds sprinkled with Korean azaleas. Mt. Hwangryeong Bongsudae now features a beautifully established observatory and a verdant park.

When ascending the recently installed observatory, you can take in commanding views of Gwangan Grand Bridge or Diamond Bridge and Haeundae Beach. You can also see Busan’s downtown, including City Hall, Seomyeon, Dongnae, Yeongdo and Busan Port to the south as well as the Gangseo area and the Nakdong River far to the west. For a real treat, come here at night to see Busan’s light-filled skyline, a must-see attraction for both visitors and locals alike.

It’s also easier than ever before to get to the top of Mt. Hwangryeong. Before the observatory installed, visitors had to ascend a rock-filled dirt path, a difficult trek for the elderly. However, visitors can now take a vehicle to the site and ascend to the observatory through a wooden stairway, which takes about five minutes.  By Kim-un, poet
