New flight services link Busan with 24 cities in 9 countries

International air services connecting Busan with overseas cities have dramatically grown. The new services are provided not just by domestic airlines but also overseas airlines that have decided to increase either the number of existing services or introduce new services.

This comes as a result of the increase in the number of Korean overseas travelers and the city's improved image in the wake of hosting various international events in recent years.

Asiana Airlines, for instance, launched new services directly linking Gimhae International Airport in Busan and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, three times a week from March 26.

By the same token, Asiana increased, from March 25, the number of Busan-Manila services from four to seven a week, and Busan-Beijing services from seven to 12. Korean Air, too, has increased services, now connecting five cities each in China and Japan and two in Southeast Asia.

Records of direct air services provided by the Gimhae International Airport show that the number of international services per week at the end of 2004 was 130, connecting 18 cities in eight countries. The figure increased to 145, linking 21 cities in eight countries at the end of 2005. Late last year, the figure grew dramatically. A tatal of 17 5 services were provided to link 24 cities in nine countries.

The growth continued in the first half of 2007 thanks to the new services by overseas airlines. Lufthansa of Germany, for instance, introduced a new Busan-Munich line on March 26, and Vietnam Airlines plans to start a direct service between Busan and Hanoi from August this year.
