The streets of Busan are changing for the safety and comfort of pedestrians, adding new street lights and a more sophisticated look.
The city is reducing the number of pedestrian overpasses it uses and replacing them with crosswalks, so people can walk around more easily. It's also changing out the older streetlights for brighter new ones.
And with sidewalks and public buildings also being renovated and modernized, the streets will be brighter than ever.
The city has been working since 2005 to build pedestrian-friendly streets, replacing 21 overpasses with crosswalks. Busan has also introduced diagonal crosswalks so pedestrians can cross two streets at once, and has built "hump crosswalks" in dangerous places to raise the level of the crosswalk and prevent cars from speeding through intersections.
The number of crosswalks was also increased to reduce the inconvenience and exertion of climbing stairs to use underground crossings. To make the streets brighter at night, Busan is planning to replace 1,000 street lights from the former City Hall on Jungangno to Guseo Interchange, starting this year and finishing by 2013. This year, the city will start by changing 60 street lights with a budget of 300 million won ($ 223,880).
