Construction scheduled to finish by the end of the month; first classes slated to begin in August

Construction of the Busan International Foreign School is almost complete.

The Busan International Foreign School in Nae-ri, Gijang-eup, Gijang County, was 90 percent completed as of the end of February.

With construction due to end on March 28, the finishing touches are in the works.

The city began construction in November 2008 at a 29,909-square-meter site with a budget of 46.9 billion won ($41.3 million).

The school is five stories - in addition to one level underground - and includes classrooms, a gym, a soccer field and tennis courts.

Final approval for the establishment is expected in June, and classes are scheduled to begin in August.

The Busan International Foreign School will be an international institute covering pre-school to high school for foreign children and Korean students who have lived abroad. In addition to the official language, English, the school plans to include Spanish language courses as well.

Korean students who have lived abroad for more than three years are qualified to enroll in classes at the school, but the Korean population will not exceed 30 percent of the total number of students.

The tuition is 20 million won for high school students and about 10 million won for pre-schoolers for one year. The school can accept up to 720 students.

Tore Jacobsen, a former honorary consulate of Norway and founder of the International School of Busan, will run the Busan International Foreign School.

An official of the International Relations Division said, “We expect that opening the Busan International Foreign School will provide a much-improved educational environment for the children of many of our foreign residents and a better quality of life. As a result, this will also help attract more foreign investment to Busan.”

As a result, this will also help attract more foreign investment to Busan, officials said.
