A
street commemorating Busan is in the works on American soil.
When
a delegation from Busan City met Dean S. Argiris, President of Wheeling
Village, during their visit to Chicago last year, the two groups laid the
groundwork for Honorary Busan Drive.
The
roadway represents the friendly relations between Wheeling Village and Busan.
The Korean Cultural Center, a key contact point for Koreans living in Chicago,
is located in the village of Wheeling, a Chicago suburb.
The
close relationship between Wheeling Village and Busan City began at the Busan
International Architectural Culture Festival, held in Busan last October.
During that time, Bob Dold, a member of the US House of Representatives, and
Argiris, took in the Busan-Chicago Sister Cities Special Exhibition and
expressed their appreciation for the exchange and cooperation between the
cities.
Last
December, the Busan City delegation, led by Jung Gyung-jin, Vice Mayor for
Administrative Affairs, visited Chicago to observe the Chicago Architecture
Biennial. The group then visited the village hall office and a bond between the
two cities was solidified.
Wheeling
Village revealed its intention to revitalize inter city exchanges and maintain
their amicable relationship into the future through the designation of Honorary
Busan Drive. The village is already home to Busan Pavilion, a Korean-style
building that has been popular since its construction in 2012. The drive is
expected to attract local visitors, while boosting Korean-American pride.
Jung
announced his gratitude for the designation and his hope to publicize Busan's
sister cities.
