The
Busan National Science Museum is nestled within the Gijang East Busan Tourism
Complex.
With
the Busan National Science Museum slated to open in December, it's drawing a
lot of interest and expectation among children and their parents.
A
movement to build a new science museum for children started in 2006, when a
million citizens signed a petition. It finally bore fruit after the 10 years of
hard work.
The
science museum is nestled within the Gijang East Busan Tourism Complex, sitting
on a 113,000-square-meter (28 acres) plot, with the facade shaped like the
triangular front of a boat. It is a regionally specific establishment, with
exhibition halls dedicated to different themes - automobiles, ships and energy
- and with 180-plus science-related items on display.
The
museum has three permanent exhibition halls: the automobile and space hall; the
shipbuilding hall; and the energy and radiation hall. Along with these, it also
has a children's hall, an outdoor exhibition venue and a camp ground, making it
an ideal destination for education and vacation.
The
museum will play a role as a science theme park where families can have fun and
relax. In particular, in the science hall, more than 80 percent of the display
items are interactive so that children can have hands-on experience and
familiarize themselves with science.
To
be specific, they can experience zero gravity, try a gyroscope and a model jet
engine, and easily learn about science principles with enormous model elephants
and experiments on buoyancy.
At
the outdoor exhibition hall, a water playground and a gigantic yo-yo have been
set up, whereas the mystery of the night skies will be revealed at the
astronomical observatory, which is equipped with a huge screen. The Busan National
Science Museum plans to run 19 customized programs for middle and high school
students as well as elementary school science curriculum.
"The
new science museum will become a comprehensive science theme park where
families can gain insight into science while having fun," said the
curator.
