UN Day event recognizes those from other countries who died in the Korean War
The 64th UN Day celebration will be held on Oct. 23 at UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea, which is located in Daeyeon-dong, Nam-gu District. The purpose of this ceremony is to appreciate and remember the founding purpose of the United Nations and to pay respects to the young soldiers from other countries who lost their lives during the Korean War.
Around 700 people are expected to attend, including Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik, the heads of the defense and foreign affairs and trade ministries, the supreme commander of UN forces in Korea and the chief of the UN Association of the Republic of Korea. Additionally, ambassadors from the 21 countries that participated in the Korean War and families of the dead who are buried in the memorial hall are scheduled to attend. A traditional Korean-style religious service will take place to commemorate the lives lost.
Starting at 11 a.m., a chuitadae (a traditional orchestra) and a dance troupe will perform in front of the UN Memorial. At 11:25 a.m., there will be a ceremony held at the UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea.
Mayor Hur will deliver a commemorative speech, followed by a floral tribute and a silent prayer. Hur will pay his respects to the dead buried in the cemetery and reveal his thoughts on UN Memorial Cemetery’s role in promoting worldwide peace and harmony for all humans.
Additionally, there will be a “UN Day Memorial Road” lined with 3,000 chrysanthemums.
At the UN intersection (in front of the Busan Museum), officials will host a memorial ceremony at 7 p.m. A musical presentation in the main hall of the Busan Cultural Center will follow at 7:30 p.m.
