Busan City has completed planting trees along the kilometer-long central median strip between Yeongju Intersection, Jungang-ro, Jung-gu and the site of the former City Hall. The central median strip was widened and 14,700 trees and 11,000 lily turf (Liriope platyphylla) plants were planted to improve the street view.

Planting trees along the central median strip is expected to improve pedestrian and driver safety by preventing jaywalking and accidental crossing of the center line, and it will also improve the downtown landscape.

As part of the city’s street tree planting project, 25,000 zelkovas were planted along a 353 meter-long central median strip of Geoje-ro in October 2008, while 63,000 trees along a 1.5 kilometer-long central median strip between Minam Intersection and the access road to Namhae Highway were planted in May, 2009. There are now 629,000 trees planted along 244 central median strips around the city.

Furthermore, the city plans to plant 46,000 zelkovas along the central median strips of 11 roads, including the APEC-ro, a major road in Haeundae between Olympic Hill and Unchon Intersection next year.

A city official said, “The tree garden created on widened central median strips of major roads is a safe zone. It is expected to prevent jaywalking and any accidental crossing of the center line, and at the same time it will also improve the city landscape“.
