The
City of Busan announced that the “Sanbokdoro Renaissance Project,” which is the
Hillside Town Regeneration Project in Busan, has won first prize at the
Metropolis Awards host by Metropolis.
Metropolis,
a World Association of the Major Metropolises, is the leading international
organization that gathers cities and metropolitan regions with more than a
million inhabitants. There are 135 member cities from across the world with
eight cities in the Republic of Korea including Seoul and Busan (April 26, 1996).
A
total of 44 projects from 33 cities around the world registered for this year’s
Metropolis Award, which is presented every three years by Metropolis. Among the
submitted projects, Busan’s “Sanbokdoro Renaissance Project,” won first prize
as an exemplary urban regeneration project.
Since
2010, the Sanbokdoro Renaissance Project has been the central effort of the
city government targeted at improving local living environments and restoring communities.
Citizen involvement is a major part of the initiative and organizers have
continuously strived to expand the project to other declined residential areas
including those villages located near railroad stations and industrial complexes.

Metropolis Award
Three
of the projects submitted will receive the Metropolis Award. Three additional
projects will receive an honorable mention. The first prize winning city will
receive a 20,000-dollar (USD) prize.
The
award ceremony is scheduled to be held at the 11th METROPOLIS World
Congress, to take place in Hyderabad in India on October 8.
