More bike paths in residential neighborhoods and parking areas for bikes are just the start of big plans

Busan is promoting riding bicycles for natives and expatriates alike as a means to enhance their health and preserve the environment, and is building more bicycle lanes.

The city is building bicycle paths to connect major residential areas, subway stations, shops, department stores and schools and is also increasing parking facilities for bikes. This year, the city plans to build a 25-kilometer bicycle path near Kyungsung University and Pukyong National University with a budget of 11.2 billion won ($8.3 million). The city also plans to build a bike path along the shore, connecting 121 kilometers of the Gijang and Gangseo areas by 2012.

Busan also plans to sponsor events to promote bicycle riding. The First Korea Bicycle Festival will be held nationwide May 3, and Busan will participate with a gathering at Olympic Park in front of Haeundae BEXCO  starting at 7 a.m. and a bicycle parade at Gwangan Bridge or Diamond Bridge. In preparation for this event, the city arranged to have Busan Bank donate 1,000 bicycles on March 30, and plans to use the bicycles to operate rental shops and riding classes. Busan MBC also held a bicycle festival on April 12, where 2,000 participants rode from Tongmyong University over the Gwangan Bridge and back on a 16-kilometer course.
