This year, Busan City is planning to transform the City Hall into an environmentally friendly building by reducing energy consumption and by recycling more resources.

Of the existing 43,190 fluorescent lamps in the City Hall, 560 will be replaced with light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Replacing a 20 Watt fluorescent lamp to a 8 Watt LED will reduce electric consumption to less than one-fifth. As the budget increases, more energy-efficient LEDs will replace the current lamps next year.

As a private investment initiative, a solar power unit capable of generating 50 kilowatts/year will be installed on the 3rd floor rooftop of Busan City Hall by the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. Ltd. The generated electricity is expected to make an annual profit of 40 million won when it is sold to the Korea Electronic Power Corporation (KEPCO). This profit will be reinvested into the installation of solar power units at social welfare facilities. In addition, 400 million won will be invested to create a small ecological environment complete with pond and bushes on the 3rd floor rooftop of the City Hall. Citizens will be able to experience a rooftop ecosystem right here in the center of the city.
