The weather agency lifted its yellow dust warning nationwide as of early Monday (April 2) as the year's worst dust storm showed signs of abating after blanketing the country for the past couple of days.

The nation was under a cloud of yellow dust from China and Mongolia on Sunday (April 1), causing concerns about health safety and a possible outbreak of infectious disease among animals as it contains potentially harmful pollutants.

This led the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) to issue a nationwide yellow dust warning for the first time since the nation began monitoring the phenomenon in 2002.

The KMA lifted dust advisories for Gangwon-do and the southern region at 6 a.m., Monday (April 2), after they were downgraded overnight.

The areas cleared from the yellow dust included part of Gangwon-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Busan, Ulsan, Jeju, Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, Daegu, and the islands off the southern coast.

The warning for Seoul was removed Sunday (April 1) night.

Yellow dust -- fine sand from the Gobi Desert which is believed to include toxic chemicals from Chinese factories -- usually hits Korea in the spring. Health officials warn it can cause respiratory disorders. The KMA advises citizens to stay indoors during warning periods to avoid the choking mix of sand and pollutants.
