The Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO) announced its plan to become one of the top ten global convention venues by 2015.

To this aim, BEXCO CEO Kim Soo Ik and the center’s staff announced on Tuesday (Dec. 4) an action plan titled "Vision 2015." The plan outlines four goals under the slogan "BEXCO, Northeast Asia’s most competitive exhibition and convention center."

The Vision 2015 goals include transforming Busan, Korea’s second largest city, into one of the top ten international convention location sites; supporting international brands’ exhibitions and conventions; securing convention infrastructure; and acquiring stable exhibition industry infrastructure.

To this aim, BEXCO also presented four action strategies: scrutinizing exhibition and convention projects, upgrading related services, heightening capability of the organization and its human resources, and advancing the management system.

Under the management goals and action strategies, BEXCO is planning to host an increased number of exhibitions and international conferences -- an increase from 520 to 720, and from 21 to 40, respectively, over last year. It also plans to nearly double the total floor space.

“Once we complete the convention infrastructure expansion, BEXCO will be able to attract more international conferences,” BEXCO CEO Kim Soo Ik said.

“BEXCO will play a pivotal role in helping Busan become the best convention venue in Northeast Asia and one of top ten convention venues in the world,” Kim added.

Busan previously hosted the Busan APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) at Nurimaru, BEXCO, in 2005. Last year, 33 international conventions were held there.

Reflecting its heightened capability and status as an international convention host, Busan ranked eighth among leading international convention cities in Asia -- moving up four notches compared to the previous year -- and 41st in the world, up 32 notches, according to the Union of International Associations (UIA) in 2006.
