Chicago and Busan celebrate five years of close sisterhood
The Busanjeong unveiling ceremony was held at the Chicago Korean Culture Hall on Nov. 30 at Wheeling, outside of Chicago.In Chicago, a Korean traditional dancheong (multicolored paintwork) pavilion was constructed.
The pavilion at the Chicago Korean Culture Hall in Wheeling, a suburb of Chicago, is named Busanjeong (Busan Pavilion). Busanjeong is a symbol of the friendship between Chicago and Busan, and the project kicked off three years ago with the groundbreaking ceremony held in August.
Busan City and Chicago held the Busanjeong Pavilion dedication on Nov. 30 to celebrate the five-year friendship and to raise the pride of Koreans living in Chicago. Busanjeong is six meters (20 feet) wide and is 5.5 meters high. Construction cost 178 million won ($165,735).
At the ceremony, 170 people participated, including Huh Chul, consul general in Chicago, Kim Youn-kwon, ambassador for International Relations of Busan City, and Koreans in Chicago along with local government officials.
Busan City has been conducting active exchanges with Chicago since 2007, such as hosting a medical symposium and sending cultural performance teams.
In 2010, then-Chicago Mayor Richard Joseph Daley visited Busan with his family and created a bridge between the two cities to develop exchanges further.
Chicago is the third-largest city of the United States with the second-largest economy and is home to world-famous telecommunication companies. It is a center of telecommunications and a North American logistics center with waterways on the Great Lakes and international air links.
