Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook said Tuesday (Oct. 31) that ethnic Korean businesspeople scattered throughout the world are an information and nerve network for Koreans in the era of borderless competition.
“In particular, the network of ethnic Korean businesspeople overseas is a precious asset which cannot be exchanged with any other thing during this time that we are negotiating with the United States on a free trade agreement,” Prime Minister Han said in a congratulatory speech at the 5th World Korean Business Convention in Busan.
A total of 2,500 Korean businesspeople, including 1,300 ethnic Koreans overseas, are participating in the annual gathering, which opened Tuesday (Oct. 31) for three days under the theme of "Step into the World with Hansang" (Korean businesspeople) at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO).
“Human and physical networks have been growing more important as global economic activities become brisk. More powerful in such global activities are culture and history and the network of the people sharing the same language,” Han told the businesspeople.
She admitted that her country has been experiencing difficulties in national security and economy amid heightening tension on the peninsula in the wake of the claimed nuclear test by the North.
“In this situation, our government is trying hard for the North to scrap its nuclear ambition through close coordination with the United States and other international communities,” Han said.
The businesspeople will approach each other to talk of contracts in trade and investment during the convention period and will enjoy a variety of staged events in the food division.
