Busan to strengthen cooperation with EU

To open EU Center in March to boost mutual exchanges

Busan has succeeded in attracting the “EU Center” to the city, which will serve as the main channel for promoting political, economic and social cooperation between Korea and the European Union.

 

It has become the first city outside of the Seoul-Gyeonggi-do area to draw an EU Center, which will open in Pusan National University in March.

 

According to the city, the EU Executive Commission invited applicants for EU centers and selected two ? one in the Seoul-Gyeonggi area and the other outside of the capital. Yonsei University has been selected as the site for the EU Center in Seoul.

 

 

According ly, the city and Pusan National University entered into preparations to formally open the center in March.

 

The university will receive subsidies of 1.8 billion won, including 1.02 billion won, or 600,000 euro, from the EU Executive Commission and 400 million won from Busan City, over the next four years for the Busan EU Center, which will play a role for exchange and cooperation with 27 EU member countries.

 

The Busan EU Center will be responsible for providing advice for economic cooperation with EU, including the attraction of EU investment, and expanding trade ties, cooperation in the political, economic, social and educational areas with the EU and playing the role as the EU's cultural center as well as its academic institute in Busan and the southeast.

 

Currently, the EU Executive Commission has opened centers in m ajor cities throughout the world, including 10 in the Un ited states, four in Canada, three each in Korea, Japan and Australia and one in Singapore, to help promote exchange and cooperation in various areas between the union and outside world.

 

On the occasion of attracting the EU Center, Busan is confirming its status as a global city and the hub of the southeast of the country.
