A local foreign school is offering high school students a chance to showcase their English writing skills and possibly win a cash prize.

Busan Foreign School is hosting an English essay competition on Feb. 7 as part of a charity fundraising campaign. All proceeds will be used to fund habitat rebuilding in impoverished communities in Thailand.

High school students aged 14 to 18 years old may participate in the event, regardless of their nationalities. They are to register at the website (http://essaycontest. bfs.or.kr) by Jan. 23. Late registration will be accepted by Feb. 4, with an extra fee of 20,000 won in addition to the original entrance fee of 40,000 won.

The topic, to be given out on the day of the competition, will be a brief essay pertaining to "Charity on a local and global scale," according to a BFS official.

A winner will be selected from each group - Koreans and foreigners - to be awarded an achievement certificate and cash prize of 500,000 won.

Participants are required to have a valid ID and registration form on the day of the contest. No dictionaries will be allowed. The essay, once turned in, is to become the property of BFS and will not be returned.
