The special event ‘Chicago and Busan, Present and Past’ will run from October 7 – 18, 2015, at Busan Port International Passenger Terminal during the Busan International Architectural Culture Festival (BIACF). The event consists of exhibitions, citizen participation programs and symposiums, and aims to celebrate the 15 year anniversary of the BIACF.
In
1893, Emperor Gojong (1852-1919) dispatched Korea's first World Expo delegation
to Chicago World's Fair. Busan has had a sister city relationship with Chicago
since 2007.
Busan
and Chicago have much in common. Both have grown into international gateways,
and overcome past adversities, namely the Korean War and the Great Chicago Fire
respectively. Busan and Chicago are also waterfront cities focused on the development
of their city’s shoreline.
The
Busan International Architectural Culture Festival is held every other year in
Busan and this year’s festival will introduce the City of Chicago, its history
and architecture relative to Busan.
The
pioneering work toward urban regeneration of the two cities’ previous mayors -
Busan mayor Kim Hyeon-ok and Chicago mayor Daniel Hadson Burnham - after the Korean
War and the Great Chicago Fire respectively, will be featured.
The
works of Chicago architects Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and Louis
Sullivan are planned to be introduced as well.
A
Facebook page event which lets citizens of both Chicage and Busan post photos
of their cities to share their culture, is taking place at https://www.facebook.com/chibu2015.
The most popular posts will be selected to win a prize.
