Gov't to ease greenbelt regulations to build futuristic tech town

A large international logistical town will go up in Gangseo in rearward district of Busan’s New Port.

The government has decided to free 33 square kilometers of greenbelt area from development restriction accepting Busan’s request. The logistical city will also accommodate a massive apartment complex.

Busan has been going all out to build the Gangseo industry-logistics town, as the biggest and core project of its “10 visions” to rehabilitate the city’s economy.

Specifically, the project calls for creating a futuristic international industrial-logistical city armed with global competitiveness that harmonizes logistical complex, large industrial park and knowledge-creating town in one place, seeking an opportunity for Busan’s epochal development.

The city has been consistently requesting the relaxation of the greenbelt restriction on this area to President Lee Myung-bak as well as relevant government agencies and political community to this end. In February, the government adopted this project as one of its national tasks to create “Dubai-style Port-Business Valley” as well as a leading project to build a great economic sphere in southeastern region in September.

Busan plans to construct an international logistical hub with global competitiveness, contributing to the enhancement of national competitive edge and using it as the future growth engine for southeastern region.

The blueprint also calls for creating global logistical complex, large industrial park and knowledge-creating city to provide space needed for reinvigorating regional economy.

In large industrial park, the city plans to attract excellent businesses from home and abroad by creating a global supply base of parts and components, which can concentrate not just southeastern region’s special industries such as machinery, auto parts, shipbuilding equipment but also future growth engines, including high value-added shipbuilding, solar cell and fuel cell manufacturing.

In the logistical complex, the city is aimed at creating assembly-processing complex, parts-supply base and liking terminal that can make the best of logistical networks here and abroad, turning Busan Port into cargo-producing, high value-added port.

In the new town to be built at its rear area, the city has drawn a blueprint of cultivating such as knowledge-service industries as financing, convention, R&D, education and tourism sectors as well as creating a deluxe, environment-friendly residential quarters.
