Busan City has decided to spend 21 billion won to create an additional 117,000 square meters of wetland for Eulsukdo or Eulsuk Island in Saha-gu District, by 2010. Eulsukdo Park was created in 2005.

The city will also build a new observatory and trails to help visitors, including overseas tourists, easily enjoy watching migratory birds there.

The city-run Nakdong Estuary Eco Center said Oct. 7 it will place orders for the construction after its final report is publicized on the basic and actual design of the expansion program of the wetlands on Eulsukdo.

“According to Busan Development Institute, the colony of reeds at the wetlands of Eulsukdo Migratory Birds Park increased from 31.7 percent in 2005 to 44.4 percent this year,” said an official of the Nakdong Estuary Eco Center, “This means that the wetlands have reduced due to accumulated soil and thus the habitat has dwindled.”

Busan City is determined to restore the wetland, by removing the reeds and sediment at Eulsukdo Park, while making the waters 1.5~2 meter de eper from the current 1 meter more or less at high tide so that birds will return.

Several dunes will also be made, where long-bills and plovers may eat their prey and rest, and plants will be planted as food, the city said.
