Busan city has embarked on a citizens' movement to be named host for the International Olympic Committee meeting in 2009, which will elect the president and board members of the IOC and decide on the host country for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

The meeting is a large-scale international event with 7,500 participants, and runs for 12 days in September/October 2009.

Busan city, professors, and citizen committees have come together to form an integrated committee of 160 representatives with Jo Kil-woo, chairman of the Busan City Council, as their leader.

The committee will ask for active government support to help win the bid, in order to further develop Busan as an international city. Next month Busan will be hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit, grouping 21 member economies.

"This (Olympic) committee is a very important event that boasts the authority of sports and promotes global cities. This bid is very competitive. Every country in the world attends this meeting, so hosting it is a great economic advantage, an opportunity to promote our city," an official of the newly formed Busan citizens' committee said.

Competing for the 2009 honor are 12 cities, including Prague, Lausanne, Cairo, Athens, Taipei and Warsaw.

The IOC will meet in Lausanne Oct. 26-28 to decide on four to five candidate cities for 2009. It will decide the winning city in February next year at a meeting in Turin, Italy.
