The Busan International Fish Market, Korea's first international wholesale fish market, opened on Sept. 18, following a trial operation since last May.

The fish market has been built in eight years and four months at a cost of 209 billion won with both central and local government budgets on 111,607 square meters of reclaimed coastal waters and landfill at Gamcheon Port in Amnam-dong, Seo-gu District. The construction started in December, 1999.

The market handles fish caught off the nation's coasts, the deep sea and the waters of foreign countries, including Russia and China. It is one of the largest wholesale fish markets in Asia. All six buildings, including the office, wholesale market, cold storage and parking building, are equipped with high-tech devices and facilities.

Two 20,000-ton vessels and ten 100-ton ships can unload fish simultaneously at the quay three meters wide and 500 meters long. The market can handle up to 3,480 tons of fish a day.

In particular, government agencies involved, such as Korea Customs Service, the National Fisheries Products Quality Inspection Service or NFIS, Korea Immigration Service and the Coast Guard have opened their branch offices there, enabling onestop services in customs clearance, quarantine inspection and immigration services, while ensuring the freshness of the fish.

Three market operators of Busan International Fish Market in Gamcheon Port have opened their offices. About 160 auctioneers are active there now.
