The ‘Morning Glory-covered building’ project running among public agencies is killing two birds with one stone – by greening the exterior of the buildings and simultaneously reducing indoor temperatures by blocking direct sunlight.

About 150 morning glories planted outside the City Hall are now in bloom, with flowers partially covering some of the glass windows of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors. As a result, indoor temperatures have reduced by about 3 to 4 , compared with rooms exposed to direct sunlight.

Haeundae-gu, Seo-gu and Buk-gu District Offices have now joined the ‘Morning Glory-covered Building’ project.

As part of its energy saving project, the City Hall also completed a 2,335 square meter rooftop garden - consisting of 4,700 trees of 36 different species and 7,000 flowers and herbs of 48 different species - on the 4th floor roof of the City Hall building in July, 2010. The City Hall rooftop garden will eventually cover the entire rooftop (a 10,000 square meter area) by 2012, becoming the nation’s largest rooftop garden.

A city official said, “Due to the heat wave and the sweltering nights, energy consumption for air conditioners keeps on increasing. As an energy saving measure, the city plans to expand rooftop gardening and morning glory-covered building projects to not only include public buildings but to include as many private buildings as possible, too.”
