“Expenditure” is the main theme of Busan Biennale 2008, which will run for 71 days from September 6th until November 15th. The Busan Biennale Organizing Committee adopted the main theme and finalized the schedule of each exhibition.

Busan Biennale is an event that exhibits art works of globally renowned artists. Starting from 2002, the Biennale consists of the Contemporary Art Exhibition, the Sea Art Festival and the Busan Sculpture Project. The Sea Art Festival, in particular, has been receiving special attention from the world’s media in that Busan, among biennale hosting cities, can boast its uniquely beautiful beaches.

Sub-themes of the three exhibitions are: “Expenditure Art Culture” for the Contemporary Art Exhibition, “Voyage without Boundaries” for the Sea Art Festival and “Avant-garde” for the Busan Sculpture Project.

The Contemporary Art Exhibition will display about 100 art works from 20 countries in all halls of the Busan Museum of Modern Art and in two halls at Suyeong Yachting Center. The Sea Art Festival will exhibit 70 works from 20 countries at 4 different locations—Gwangalli Beach, the former Samik Leports town at Namcheon-dong, stores around Gwangalli beach, and Geumnyeonsan Subway Station. The Busan Sculpture Project will display 20 sculptures from 15 countries in the APEC Naru Park.

The main theme "Expenditure,” borrowed from French Philosopher Georges Bataille, has a philosophic and positive meaning, as it refers to the products of contemporary culture and art, not simply to the mundane process of consumption.
