Mayor Hur presents administrative goals for latter half of tenure

"I will devote myself to reviving Busan's economy and stabilizing public livelihood with a renewed resolve." So said Mayor Hur Nam-sik while presenting major policy tasks for the latter half of his second term in office. Mayor Hur said he would also make brisk efforts to advance the globalization of Busan as well as its balanced development.

Hur made these and other remarks during a news conference on the occasion of his second year in office as the fourth elected head of municipal government. First and foremost is the enhancement of policies for rehabilitating Busan's economy. To this end, the mayor promised to make Busan a "good city

to do business in," introduce measures to reinvigorate private investment and turn Busan Economic Promotion Board into a one-stop service agency.

As the most urgent issue, he stressed the "stabilization of public livelihood." For instance, the city will introduce quasi-public operation of city buses and expand free subway transit service to village buses to help cut citizens' transportation costs. Hur said he would positively tackle the issue of unsold apartments by exerting all his administrative capacity.

Hur emphasized the need for the city to jump to a gateway to Northeast Asia, a city that represents the whole of Asia. To solidify Busan's basis for globalization, he is to create a consensus by studying feasibility and problems of the proposed construction of an undersea tunnel between Korea and Japan.
