Republic of Korea's Agency for Patriots and Veterans Affairs said Friday (July 18) that A group of five Norwegian veterans who fought in the Korean War will arrive here next week as part of a program to mark the 55th anniversary of the end of the three-year fratricidal conflict.
Organized by Norway's Defense Ministry and the agency, the 10-day tour will begin Sunday with a visit to the U.N. Memorial Cemetery in the southern city of Busan and to a monument commemorating the participation of medical units from five nations, including Norway, in the war.
It would be the first time for Norwegian veterans to visit the country on a program sponsored by their own government, according to the agency.
The agency runs a similar program to pay for visits by Korean War veterans and plans to invite 16 more Norwegians to a September ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the foundation of Republic of Korea's military.
One of five nations to contribute medical units to the United Nations Command, along with Denmark, Italy, India and Sweden, Norway was the only country out of the five that suffered casualties during the 1950-53 war.
The group will be accompanied by 23 others, including officials from Norway's Defense Ministry and their families, the agency said in a media release.
