Amid the high-rocketing oil price worldwide, Busan Port Authority(BPA) took energy-saving measures by utilizing photovoltaic, geothermal, and other new and renewable energy in port operation.

BPA held a meeting to take measures to save 10% energy at Busan Port on July 8 with more than 20 people from terminal operators, Korea Shipping Association, and other relating authorities being together.

BPA plans to introduce BIPV(Building Integrated Photovoltaic) System to power a business supporting facility, which is 6,500 size of floor area and 8-story building at Busan New Port. It is said that the system will produce 20Kw of electricity per hour.

BPA will also utilize geothermal energy in an operating office of phase 2-1 at Busan New Port operated by Hanjin Shipping at the end of this year for cooling and heating system.

The Port Authority will employ BIPV System to produce 50Kw of electricity per hour at an operating office of phase 2-2 at Busan New Port operated by Hyundai Marine Merchant from September next year.

BPA will invest KRW 5 billion to install systems to use photovoltaic, geothermal, and wind energy by 2013 and KRW 3 billion for system to use marine energy by 2016.

BPA believes that these measures will lower the nation's dependence on oil and decrease its risks by securing inexpensive and stable energy sources. In addition, these energy-saving policies will develop Busan Port into an eco-friendly port.

In a short term, BPA will replace air-conditioners and lights with system air-conditioners and LED lights respectively.

BPA has changed power system of 94 units of RTGC out of total 161 units from oil to electricity since last year.
