It is expected that typhoon Wokung, the tenth this year, may directly affect the Korean peninsula. According to the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA), it is currently located 300 km from Kagoshima, Japan. It is expected that the typhoon will continue its approach to the southern regions of Korea at a speed of 15km per hour. Now, many are expecting the rain to come earlier and to bring an end to the heat wave, but that hasn't been the case just yet. Rain is predicted for the next couple of days, especially on the east and south coasts.

In fact,
Jeju Island is expected to get directly affected by typhoon Wukong with heavy rain expected for this weekend. Rain is in the forecast for the entire peninsula, but it will fall on the central regions first. A source from the KMA said that in general a typhoon comes up toward the north and turns right, but this one is unexpectedly opposite, coming toward northwest. He said, "It is very evident it will hit the southern region and south coast, provided that it doesn't change its track."

Due to this unusual situation, some southern areas are expected to get as much as 80 millimeters of rain, but Busan is expecting around 20 to 60 mm until August 18, bringing a bit of relief from the sticky and steamy weather we've been facing. Looking at the current conditions, Busan and
Gyeongsangnam-do are already showing signs of rain from late tonight. The KMA forecasts that this rain will continue until this Sunday, August 20.

In particular, the KMA requests ships and fishing boats to listen to forecasts on August 17 and 18 because it is expected that Wukong will create high waves along the south coast, from 2 to 5 meters high. The KMA stated, "Because it is moving slower and its direction is very unstable and unexpected, citizens have to pay close attention to forecasts after late August 19 until 20.
