BUSAN __ Last week, Busan residents had a very rare opportunity to look at works by one of the most famous Romanian painters Iulia Halaucescu.
The Romanian Embassy organized an exhibition of Halaucescu's watercolors at the Citizen's Hall in Beomil-dong, Busan, from Monday to Saturday with the help of the Busan local government.
“It is a great pleasure for me to introduce to you an amazing exhibition that brings together only some of the most impressive works of the famous Romanian painter Iulia Halaucescu,” Romanian Ambassador Valeriu Arteni said during the opening ceremony for the exhibition.
The exhibition showed 33 of Halaucescu's works, which include paintings titled “Korean Painters in Romanian Workshop, 1959” and “Korean Sculptor Visiting Romania, 1959.”
The ambassador said that the Romania's most representative painter spiritually connected Romania with Korea via the two paintings of Korean painters and sculptors in the 1950s.
Art critics often name the painter the “lady of the Romanian watercolors” for her keen sense of pure beauty and simplicity in her paintings.
An exhibition of Halaucescu's work was first held in Seoul last summer to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Seoul and Bucharest. Then, the exhibition was held in Daejeon last June.
Asked why he brought the paintings to Busan, the ambassador said Busan has very special relations with Romania.
“I think Busan and Constanta will likely be sister cities soon, and the chambers of commerce of the two cities have already made this relationship,” Arteni said. “But the most important thing is to give the opportunity for Busan citizens to see Halaucescu's paintings.”
The paintings will go back to Romania by the end of this year.
