French baroque era engraver Claude Mellan(1598-1688)’s copperplate engraving in 1677, Agripina, sitting Nero’s mother, depicts delicately with the same directional line only. Wrinkles on the cloth as well as facial expression are palpable. Light and shade and curves give a feeling of solidity with elaborate technique accurately.
Busan French Cultural Center hosts “The Louvre Museum's Copperplate Engravings Collection” at Kyungsung University art gallery until May 31st. There are about 13,000 copper-engraving artworks at the engravings archive in Louvre museum and engravings by 28 artists from 17th century up to now are on display for this collection. 12 Copy art works from 17th century to 20th century and 23 genuine artworks by modern artists, so a total of 35 artworks are on display.
Collections are done by three themes. First, the artworks of human bodies consist of works of Claude Mellan and Eduard Valdis’s “A Man who takes out a thorn” is impressive. The works by Georg Baselitg who had led German new expressionism, and those of Philip Favier are in the collection. Second, in the section of scenery, encounter of external reality and inner reality provides strong feelings. 19th century French Ecole de Barbizon artist Charles Dovini’s “Little Forest”, 20th century artist Louis Bourjois “Mountain Lake”, Bertran Henri’s “On the Way to Back Rock”, etc. show individualistic art world. Third, for the section of Myth, many artworks by artists of early 20th century Fauvism are on display. The artworks of various technique as engraving, etching with new perspective, result of re-creation show us personal taste of artists and art styles of the times.
