The triennial meeting of an association of the world's waterside cities opened Wednesday (May 21) in Busan, Korea's southern port city, organizers said.

The opening ceremony for three-day International Conference of Aquapolises (ICAP) took place Wednesday at Nurimaru APEC House near a beach in Busan city, with some 160 participants from 41 cities in 15 countries attending.

Proposed by the municipal government of Osaka, Japan, the conference was organized to share information and mutual issues between cities based near the waterside.

The word "Aquapolis" is a compound word of aqua, or water, and polis, or a city, according to the organizers.

The conference held in Busan is the fifth of its kind, following meetings held at Osaka in 1990, at Shanghai in 1993, at Piraeus in 1997, and again at Osaka in 2003.

"Participants from ICAP member cities, who have each established their own unique history and landscapes with water and greenery, came together to discuss ways to renovate our cities and to respect each other's identity so that these cities will lead the civilization of the 21st century," said Hur Nam-sik, Busan mayor.

"With the theme 'For a Sustainable Aquapolis', the 2008 Busan conference will be a good opportunity to exchange ideas, identify problems facing us, and come up with measures to tackle them," he said.
