International flights increase 47 percent from previous year
International and local routes from Gimhae International Airport, the air gateway to Busan City, are being ramped up this year in tandem with growing tourist traffic as more people visit the country and also head out on outbound trips and package tours.
Busan Regional Aviation Administrator has adjusted flight schedules at the airport from March 25 to October 27, with international flights increasing 47 percent from 458 flights a week to 672. Meanwhile, domestic flights will grow 6 percent from 778 to 826.
The region’s four local airlines will operate 430 flights a week, marking an increase of 155, while foreign airlines will run 242 weekly flights, 59 more than that of last year.
Compared to last summer, flights to Southeast Asia will have grown by 84 a week to 230. There will also be an additional 78 flights to Japan, making a weekly total of 224, and 52 to China, for a new total of 180.
The premium low-cost airline company Starflyer Airline is launching a regular Busan to Kitakyushu regular twice a day from July. Jeju Air is considering starting flights to Osaka, and Air Busan is mulling two or three new routes to Japan and Southeast Asia.
Korean Air will operate 33 more flights and Air Busan an extra 18 flights a week. However, Asiana Airlines will operate three fewer flights to Jeju each week this year. It said it will operate two flights a week to Gimpo, 32 to Jeju and 14 to Incheon.
An official from the Busan Regional Aviation Administrator said, “International routes have increased greatly as Korean Air will resume flights to Guam and increase flights to Qingdao in China.”
“Furthermore, Air Busan will sta rt operating a Qi ngdao route, and Japan’s Starflyer Airline is starting flights to and from Kitakyushu. Considering the growing demand among Koreans for overseas travel, the number of international routes is likely to keep increasing for some time.”
The summer schedule will be announced on the web site of the Busan Regional Aviation Administrator and each airline after receiving the approval of the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. For passengers who have made reservations, the airlines will provide further details.
