City will commemorate founding of the United Nations with an event at UN Memorial Cemetery

“We engrave your names in our hearts with love." epitaph on a monument to UN soldiers who died in the Korean War.

Busan and Korea as a whole owe a great debt to the United Nations. Soldiers aligned with the world body which was created to promote and ensure peace fought valiantly in the Korean War decades ago. Many people in Busan want to ensure that the nation never forgets their bravery and sacrifices, particularly when it comes to those who died during the conflict fighting for people they didn't even know. Busan has strived to honor these soldiers, hoping to keep their spirit alive and ensure they are always remembered.

The city is home to the UN Memorial Cemetery, which is the only one of its kind in the world housing the graves of United Nations soldiers. The flags of the 21 nations that fought for the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula in the war are always billowing at full mast. Freedom-loving citizens and those thankful for the soldiers who died visit UN Memorial Cemetery all year round to pay their respects.

The cemetery takes on even greater importance this month as the world celebrates United Nations Day on Oct. 24. Busan will hold a ceremony to mark the occasion on Oct. 22, inviting a legion of ambassadors from countries that participated in the war including the United States, Britain, France and New Zealand.

The city has also extended invitations to leaders from other nations as well. The ceremony will feature appearances by Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik, government officials and diplomatic leaders. It will include the screening of a documentary and various performances before the actual ceremony begins. The main events include a memorial service, floral tribute and a silent tribute to honor the fallen soldiers who defended freedom. The areas surrounding UN Memorial Cemetery will be decorated with chrysanthemums from Oct. 22 to 31 as well.

Busan has taken a lead role in promoting peace in the region. Aside from the UN Memorial Cemetery, the city built the APEC Peace Park in 2005 to host the APEC Summit. The city will also pump 106.2 billion won ($95 million) into a 574,000-square-meter site near UN Memorial Cemetery, where it will construct an area to promote world peace.
