Busan Port is about to gain some more prestige in the world of shipping and trade.

The Busan Port Authority or BPA that manages the port signed a memorandum of understanding with the California Association of Port Authorities (CAPA) on Sept. 15 at the JW Marriot Hotel to cooperate going forward.

At the signing ceremony, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger - widely known for his role in action movies such as the “Terminator” - joined Busan Port Authority President Roh Ki-tae as well as Mike Walter, a member of the five-person Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners and L.A. Harbor Commissioner Kaylynn Kim to seal the deal. CAPA covers 11 ports, including L.A. Port (which ranks No. 1 in traffic), Long Beach Port (No. 2) and Oakland Port (No. 5). The United States accounts for 15 percent of Busan Port’s total trade volume, ranking second after China.

Under the MOU, the BPA will hook up with CAPA to increase sea transport volume, improve their infrastructures and bolster operations, officials said.
