The former US Army base Camp Hialeah, which was returned to the city of Busan after 100 years, was opened to the public from April 24, 2010 and was scheduled to close again after September 30, 2010, but that date has now been pushed back a month. As of August 31, 2010, about 116,000 citizens have visited the site.

To successfully develop the Citizens’ Park on the former Camp Hialeah site, the city has accepted the view from the 1st Hialeah Roundtable that there should be a longer opportunity for Busan citizens to visit the site, and has decided to extend the opening period until the end of October.

The opening hours remain the same, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and visitors should arrive no later than 4 p.m.

All facilities and services for the convenience and safety of visitors will also remain the same.

The Hialeah Roundtable, which consists of about 30 members including City Council members, journalists, experts, citizen groups, and related city officials, is an organization aiming to collect various opinions for the successful construction of the Citizens’ Park. The roundtable group has existed since August, 2010 and will continue through February, 2011.

The roundtable conference is held every 3 weeks and the following matters are to be discussed

Value and management strategy of Citizens’ Park

Utilization of the remaining buildings on the site

Park Design

Stream restoration and recovery from environment pollution

Park program and contents

Park management and others

A city official said, “This will be the last chance to see the former site of Hialeah Camp before the Citizens’ Park is built. We therefore encourage citizens to take this final opportunity to come and see the site before it is too late.”
