The river restoration project in the Hwamyeong district of Busan has become the first such project to be completed out of those currently being pursued nationwide by the government. Overall construction was completed last Friday, on Sept. 10.

The aim of the project in Hwamyeong was to restore the ecology of the region around the Nakdong River, and create an environmentally friendly park for citizens to enjoy. The area previously suffered from pollution caused by the use of fertilizers and pesticides. The Nakdong River is the second longest river in Korea after the Yalu, and runs through the Gyeongsang region.

Under the lead of the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, greenhouses and other sources of pollution were removed from the banks of the river over the course of three years. The restored riverside is now equipped with an ecology education center, a bicycle road, two baseball parks, and ten tennis courts.

The project had an overall budget of 40 billion won, with 18.5 billion coming from the provincial budget, and construction costs of 21.5 billion shared by the national and local city government. The opening ceremony on Friday was attended by local lawmakers, members of the restoration project committee, and the mayor of Busan.
