Landfill to be transformed into a 'Healing Forest'

Haeundae Arboretum broke ground on February 10, 2012. The 628,292㎡ arboretum will be built on the former landfill site in Seokdae-dong, Haeundae-gu District, and will be the largest city arboretum in Korea.
At a total cost of 56.3 billion won, the Haeundae Arboretum project is being carried out in two phases until 2016.
In Phase 1, about 30 plots with roses, orchards and herbs, and a 'Healing Forest' will be built on the 415,000㎡ upper part of the landfill by 2013. Some 133,150 trees of 345 different species will be planted in the botanical gardens, along with distinctive types of flowers.
In Phase 2, sports facilities for soccer, tennis and gate ball, and an 'Urban Life Forest' consisting of a forested area, greenhouse and nature learning center will be built on the 213,000㎡ lower part of the landfill by 2016. A Visitors Center will be built here as well.
In addition, an urban forest research center, climate change-sensitive botanical garden, forest cultural exhibition center, and cultural art square will be facilitized in order to better be able to conduct research into our precious forest resources.
The Seokdae landfill reached its full capacity in May 1993 and the ground here has now stabilized.
In seeking its utilization, Busan City asked the Korea Forest Service to conduct a feasibility analysis for the establishment of an arboretum at the former landfill site and received confirmation that the site was deemed 'suitable'. Therefore, since February 2010, the City has been planning for the establishment of the Haeundae Arboretum and earlier held an arboretum design contest in preparation for the construction of the Haeundae Arboretum.
