Many events have been scheduled to celebrate the Korean holiday known as Daeboreum, or “Great Full Moon,” which marks the first full moon of the Lunar New Year and this year falls on Feb. 6. This is a special day for the Koreans, who burn heaps of straw called “daljip” made with pine trees and bamboo, and wish for peace for their families and neighbors. In a tradition known as “Ganggangsuwollae,” women hold hands, form a ring and dance in circles to wish for a plentiful harvest.
Busan City will celebrate the full moon on Feb. 6 at an annual event known as Jeongwol daeboreum, with many festivities and games scheduled to take place.
Haeundae-gu District will host the largest festival on Haeundae Beach. Dubbed the 30th Haeundae Dalmaji Oncheon Festival, it will include traditional folk games at noon at the beach and dance dramas at 2 p.m. in front of the district office.
On a special stage near the sea, a singing room will be set up. Other highlights, which will get under way in the early evening, will include praying rites and a ceremony in which participants burn objects fashioned in the shape of the moon (called daljip taeugi).
Meanwhile, a brown seaweed festival organized by the Songjeong Culture Tourism Development Association will take place from 10 a.m. on the same day. The 14th Songjeong Jeongwol daeboreum festival will give visitors the chance to engage in praying rituals directed at the god of the moon. Citizens will also get busy playing daljip taeugi among other forms of entertainment.
Also on Feb. 6, at Samnak Park in Sasang-gu District, the 13th Sasang Traditional Daljipnori festival is being prepared from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and the 16th Suyeong Traditional Daljipnori festival will take place at Gwangalli Beach in Suyeong-gu District from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. as well.
Folk games such as yutnori, jaegichargi and tuho will be played and similar praying rituals organized. Other events will let visitors experience Korean traditions such making local charms and kites.
Furthermore, the Songdo Daljip Festival will take place on Songdo Beach in Seo-gu District from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., while the Nakdong Folk Dalmaji Festival in Buk-gu District will be held at the Deokcheon Water Drainage Facility and nearby Nakdong River.
