□ In partnership with Gijang-gun, Busan Metropolitan City has endorsed the waterway of Jwagwangcheon stream, which flows through the heart of Jeonggwan-eup, as the city’s second municipal garden.
○ A municipal garden is a green space created and managed by a local government. The Nakdonggang Ecological Garden was designated as Busan’s first in 2023.
○ The Jwagwangcheon Municipal Garden is particularly notable as the first of its kind in eastern Busan.
□ Stretching approximately 3.5 kilometers through central Jeonggwan-eup and covering 122,086.6 square meters, the Jwagwangcheon Municipal Garden will be organized into four themed zones; the Garden of Warmth, Garden of Wellbeing, Garden of Joy, and Garden of Longing.
○ Since 2015, Busan and Gijang-gun have cultivated paths lined with wildflowers and seasonal blooms. Building on these efforts, the new garden will reflect the surrounding ecology: ▲ Garden of Warmth: pampas grass and calming plants, ▲ Garden of Wellbeing: medicinal and edible herbs, ▲ Garden of Joy, vibrant spaces for large crowds, and ▲ Garden of Longing: nostalgic elements.
○ To support its development, on January 1, 2025, Gijang-gun established the Jwagwangcheon Municipal Garden Team and enacted related ordinances.
□ Busan and Gijang-gun will continue to work closely to transform this ecological stream area into a year-round public garden that blends natural resources with urban accessibility.
○ Additional plans also encompass a range of initiatives focused on the garden’s historical and cultural character while encouraging active community involvement.
