Major foreign press and global media lavish praise on the charms of Busan


The city of Busan announced that major foreign press and global media have been favorably praising the charms of Busan city.


All this can be attributed to the government’s and Busan’s PR of the city’s charms through the following multifaceted ways: negotiations and PR activities to attract the World Expo 2030, the Busan International Film Festival in 2022, and the BTS Busan Concert supporting the city’ to bring the World Expo 2020 to Busan.


When looking at the details of the coverage, the British TV Channel 5 broadcast Alexander Armstrong aired a segment on South Korea at 9pm on November 8 (U.K. local time). It was part of an original documentary consisting of three parts.


The news program filmed a travel documentary about experiencing and introducing local cultures and foods while traveling around the world. In the episode about Korea, the show’s hosts traveled across Seoul, Busan, and Jeju.


Among the many cities in Korea, the documentary crew stayed in Busan for two days. They said they intensively filmed the places where the flavor and atmosphere of Busan, including Jagalchi Market, Geumjeong Mountain Fortress, and Makgeolli Village, can be felt.


Iceland with Alexander Armstrong was broadcast last year and attained 1.9 million clicks. It was also broadcast this year as part of All Documentaries in the World on EBS in Korea.


On October 26, 2022, National Geographic Traveler, a travel media outlet published by the American Association of Geographers, selected Busan as one of the 25 breathtaking places and experiences for 2023. Busan is the only city in Asia to be selected.


This is the second time that Busan was selected as one of the top travel destinations by travel media, like National Geographic Traveler. Before this, Busan was chosen as one of Asia’s best destinations in 2018 by Lonely Planet, which is considered the bible of travel to backpackers worldwide.


Even online travel media has been actively publicizing Busan’s sights and sounds. One such site, ‘The Travel’, introduced Busan as a fascinating city harmonizing tradition and modernity, which cannot be seen as under the shadow of Seoul anymore. The Travel recommended visiting Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, Taejongdae, Hwangnyeongsan Mountain, Ahopsan Forest, Jagalchi Market, and Beomeosa Temple.


On October 25, the French online media outlet DEMOTIVATEUR introduced representative places to viewers to better understand the beauty of Busan. It introduced the city’s aquarium where families can enjoy time together with their children, as well as Beomeosa Temple, Jagalchi Market, Taejongdae, Yongdusan Park, Busan Cinema Center, Igidae, Centum City, and the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea. It also included transportation information.


DEMOTIVATEUR recommended Busan as a must-travel destination if one plans to visit Korea. The online media outlet mentioned that Busan has a long history dating back to the Neolithic Age. They also mentioned that Busan played a pivotal role during the Korean War and that the city has many beautiful views and tourist attractions, such as beaches, in Busan.


The Philippine news media outlet Rappler introduced Busan as a popular summer tourist attraction located along the coast and suggested that people can still jog and swim on the beaches even in cold winter months. Rappler remarked that although Busan is a large city, it experiences cool weather due to the ocean, and can be used as a base to visit other cities you want, such as Daegu and Gyeongju. Busan was recommended as an economical and valuable travel destination and outlined a detailed itinerary and cost recommendations. Rappler is the first news website and independent press in the Philippines. Its co-founder Maria Ressa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021. Rappler is expanding its influence globally.


Egyptian English news outlet Sada Elbalad reported that Korea’s coastal city of Busan is ready to surprise the world by devoting all its energy and capabilities to winning its World Expo bid and against Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh, a competitor for the 2030 World Expo. Sada Elbalad explained in detail that attracting the Expo was selected as a national task in 2019 in Korea, and added that there is no better place to find solutions to the fundamental challenges that humanity faces today in the world.


Malaysia’s largest English daily newspaper, The Star, belonging to Star Media Group, predicted that the Busan 2030 World Expo will have a roughly 61 trillion KRW effect on the Korean economy. The Star introduced Busan’s North Port (Bukhang), located where the old city center meets the ocean, as a place where visitors can simultaneously enjoy nature and the charms of the large city. The newspaper remarked that Busan is a hub for the maritime industry, equipped with international exchanges, finance, and R&D facilities. Moreover, the city will be reborn as a global hub city by attracting the 2030 World Expo.


Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “I deeply appreciate all the domestic and foreign press and foreign reporters that have shown a great interest in and affection towards Busan.” He emphasized, “Busan will concentrate all its capabilities into the expansion of infrastructure and safe travel so that visitors to Busan can comfortably enjoy travel.” The Mayor added, “I cordially ask for your great interest in the Expo to seek solutions to the fundamental challenges faced by humanity, including the climate crisis.”
