The City of Busan announced that the Donghae Line, a double-tracked railway line connecting Busan and Ulsan, has fully opened on December 28, 2021.

With a total 2.827 trillion won investment, the metro connection project between Busan and Ulsan has been ongoing since 2003. The first phase of the line from Bujeon station to Ilgwang station (28.5km, 15 stations) was completed in 2016 and the second phase of the line from Ilgwang station to Taewhagang station (37.2km, 8 stations) opened on December 28, 2021.

The Donghae line is fully operational as the completion of the second phase of the line has been completed. It takes 76 minutes traveling one-way from Bujeon station to Taewhagang station. With the completion of the line, the southeastern region (Busan and Ulsan) becomes a one-hour megalopolis living area.

Trains on the line operate every 15 minutes during peak times, and every 25 to 30 minutes during normal hours. A total of about 100 train services operate daily from Bujeon station to Taehwagang station. The fare is 1,300 won to travel within 10km and an extra 200 won per additional 10km. As well, an additional 200 won will be added onto the fare when crossing the border of the two cities Busan and Ulsan. So the maximum fare could reach up to 2,500 won.

The public transportation transfer system in Busan applies to local buses, the metro and village/neighborhood buses, the same as the current system. The city also continuously requested that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport help reduce operational interval times for the convenience of traveling citizens.

A ceremony to launch four railroads connecting Daegu, Yeongcheon, Gyeongju, Ulsan and Busan took place on December 28, 2021 at Taewhagang station in Ulsan with the participation of President Moon Jae-in, Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon, the Mayors of Ulsan and Daegu, the Governor of Gyeongsangbukdo, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Noh Hyeong-ok and other important delegates.
