World Cinema Landmark

On September 1st, the city of Busan began construction on the “World Cinema Landmark” project as part of the plan to celebrate the designation of Busan as a UNESCO Creative City of Film and to promote the Busan Cinema Center (BCC), the location of the main stage of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), as a global tourist attraction.

The construction is expected to be completed by next January with plans to carry out the project in two different steps. The first step includes diverse symbolic sculptures and cinema streets to be built in and around BCC, such as memorial colonnades featuring the 100-year history of Korean cinema, interactive art sites using the glass on buildings, LED screens for showing images to visitors, and so on.

For the next step, a convergence cultural complex will be created with a variety of exhibition and experience spaces, including diverse studios. In particular, to provide a more plentiful opportunity to enjoy cinema, there will be a film library, DVD rooms, and so on, along with a ‘Cinema Streaming Zone’ which enables visitors to watch films on their private mobile devices in the complex by accessing BIFF’s film archive.

Regarding this project, Acting Mayor Byeon Sung-wan said, “This will contribute to Busan’s tourism industry through the innovation of the whole district around BCC, moreover, it will contribute to raising Busan’s reputation as a UNESCO Creative City of Film.”
