The
City of Busan will launch a campaign across the city to promote sustainable
urban transportation for one week from September 16 to September 22 to
celebrate the annual event, World Car-free Day (September 22).
The
city intends to encourage public transportation in order to tackle problems
caused by driving private cars, such as air pollution, traffic congestion and
excessive energy consumption, and to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in
response to climate change. The event’s success will rely on the voluntary
participation of citizens.
To
promote the event, all city workers from public agencies will be encouraged to
use public transport on September 19 due to September 22nd falling on a Saturday.
Citizens can voluntarily participate in the event.
World
Car-free Day is a global event held on September 22. It encourages drivers to
give up their cars for a day and use public transportation, ride a bicycle, or
simply walk.
The
origins of Car-free Day can be traced to the French town of La Rochelle, where
a car-free day was organized in 1997. In 2001, the car-free day went global to
become World Car-free Day, which is celebrated on September 22. The car-free day
started in Korea in 2008.
