Busan Metropolitan City Hosts the 2026 Kormarine Conference

Busan Metropolitan City, headed by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that it will hold the 2026 Kormarine Conference at 10:00 a.m. today, September 1, in the Grand Ballroom of Wyndham Grand Busan.

Under the theme “Navigating Uncertainty: Geopolitics, Decarbonization and the Future of Maritime Industry,” the conference will bring together approximately 400 participants from eight countries to examine major issues facing the shipbuilding and shipping industries and explore strategies for responding to future challenges.

The conference is jointly hosted by Busan Metropolitan City and the Ministry of Trade and Industry and organized by the Korea Marine Equipment Association. The program will include an opening ceremony, a keynote speech, and thematic presentations.

The conference consists of a keynote speech and three sessions covering a broad range of major issues surrounding the shipbuilding and shipping industries, including geopolitical changes, decarbonization regulations, AI-based autonomous navigation, and ship financing.

In the keynote speech, Yang Chang-ho, Executive Vice Chairman of the Korea Shipowners’ Association, will present on “Cooperation and Development Strategies for the Korean Shipping and Shipbuilding Industries in Response to Geopolitical Shifts.”

Session 1, titled “Environmental Regulations in Shipping and Shipbuilding: Trends and Outlook,” will address the International Maritime Organization’s mid-term measures, European environmental regulations, the transition to carbon-neutral technologies in shipping and ports, and the application of small modular reactors (SMRs) in the maritime and shipping industries.

Session 2, titled “New Market Trends in Shipbuilding and Marine Equipment,” will discuss the hydrogen roadmap, an AI-based training data platform for autonomous ships, AI transformation (AX) in the shipbuilding industry, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) pump technologies.

Session 3, titled “Shipbuilding Industry Competitiveness,” will examine comparisons of shipbuilding competitiveness among major countries, differences between Korean and Japanese ship-financing structures, and developments in Chinese ship financing, while exploring next-generation policy response strategies.

Through the conference, Busan Metropolitan City expects to share major developments arising from the rapidly changing global shipbuilding and shipping industries, as well as key technological and financial issues, while expanding exchanges and cooperation among experts from industry, academia, research institutions, and government.

By discussing international changes affecting the shipbuilding and shipping industries and jointly exploring future response measures, the conference is also expected to strengthen the competitiveness of Busan’s shipbuilding and maritime industry and enhance the city’s standing as a global maritime capital.
