Classic Busan to Host France’s Orchestre national de Metz Grand Est

Classic Busan will host an invited performance by France’s Orchestre national de Metz Grand Est at Busan Concert Hall at 3:00 p.m. on September 20.

Presented in celebration of the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France, the concert will bring together Orchestre national de Metz Grand Est, one of France’s leading national orchestras, conductor David Reiland, who is well known to Korean audiences, and organist Lucile Dollat to showcase the diverse appeal of French music.

Orchestre national de Metz Grand Est: Based in Metz in eastern France, the orchestra was officially granted the status of “Orchestre national” by the French Ministry of Culture in 2022.

Drawing on a broad repertoire ranging from opera to symphonic works, the orchestra presents both the traditions of French music and a contemporary sensibility. At its Busan performance, audiences can expect the refined tone and rich sound distinctive to a French orchestra.

The concert will be conducted by David Reiland. Familiar to Korean audiences as the former seventh Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Korean National Symphony Orchestra, Reiland is known for his wide-ranging repertoire spanning opera and symphonic music, as well as his nuanced musical interpretations.

Organist Lucile Dollat will appear as soloist. She won both the Grand Prix and the Audience Prize at the André Marchal–Gaston Litaize International Organ Competition held in Paris in 2017 and has served as organ artist in residence at the Radio France Auditorium in Paris since 2022.

In particular, the concert will highlight the majestic appeal of Busan Concert Hall’s pipe organ through the rich sonority created by the organ together with Orchestre national de Metz Grand Est.

The program will feature Claude Debussy’s “La Mer, Three Symphonic Sketches for Orchestra,” a representative work of French Impressionism; Maurice Ravel’s “La Valse”; and Camille Saint-Saëns’s “Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 78, ‘Organ.’”

Debussy’s “La Mer” depicts the movement, light, and colors of the sea through a vivid orchestral palette, while Ravel’s “La Valse” is distinguished by its brilliant and sophisticated orchestral colors. Saint-Saëns’s “Organ Symphony” will bring the concert to a magnificent close with the powerful resonance of orchestra and organ.

Saint-Saëns’s “Organ Symphony,” in particular, is a landmark French symphony combining the majestic sonority of the organ with the brilliance of the orchestra. The performance is expected to offer audiences a special opportunity to experience the Busan Concert Hall organ firsthand.

To mark the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France, Classic Busan will introduce Busan citizens to a distinguished French orchestra and major works of the French repertoire, continuing cultural and artistic exchange between the two countries through music.
